Newspapers May Offically Become Charities In France

As Europe often sets trends in media that eventually filter over to the states, it’s interesting to see that newspapers might officially become charity cases in France. As detailed at followthemedia.com, the French Culture Minister has proposed that either a single national foundation or individual foundations for each paper newspaper be established that would allow charitable gifts to support the country’s newspapers. While a few articles have appeared in the U.S. proposing the same idea, France has actually taken a further step towards such a scenario. It’s only a matter of time before it happens on this side of the Atlantic.

I never thought of this before. Who better to have their hand in the public cash register than the local newspapers? Can’t you just imagine the arguments?
    ~”We serve the public.”
~”Who else serves as a community watchdog?”
~”We deserve to be supported since we support all parts of the community.”
~”Why should we be held to the same standard as these other media?”
It amazes me, frankly, that the local business community supports the local daily paper.
