Vermont Is The Only State To Increase Job Listings In February

According to LinkUp.com, Vermont was the only state in the U.S. in which the total number of jobs listed on company web sites grew in February. In every other state in the nation, the number of total jobs listed on company web sites declined from January’s numbers, with an average decline of 24%. For the nation as a whole, the total number of unique jobs that were posted to company web sites throughout the month fell by 21%, from 929,204 in January to 732,270 in February. New jobs posted to company web sites also fell by 31%, from 726,172 new, unique job postings in January to 503,969 new, unique job postings in February.

LinkUp.com aggregates job listings that employers post on their own corporate web site. These job listings or openings are often not advertised anywhere else on the web or in print. As well, the aggregated data, pulled from 7,957 companies throughout the U.S., does not include any duplicate job listings, as is the case with many other classified aggregators that pull data from multiple sites that might contain the exact same job listing. But while the data presents a very high-quality, unique, and highly relevant snapshot of the nation’s employment picture, it is not meant to represent the exact number of job openings in any given state. The vast majority of companies in the U.S. do not list their job openings on their company web site, if they even have a corporate web site, and LinkUp is still accumulating data from new companies being included in the data set. (The percentage declines from January to February are probably worse in actuality since the February numbers listed in the chart above include data from more companies than the January numbers). In any event, the LinkUp numbers provide another data point that further proves what most already know to be true – the state of the U.S. jobs market is abysmal.
